The two family members read their lists in ritualistic fashion, revealing that almost all their relatives have died. How fitting, then, that Timeline Theatre has chosen to revive the drama A Shayna Maidel, which serves as a reminder maidl of the devastation that faced European Jews in the 30s and 40s and that these horrors did not happen to faceless people; they happened to families. Vanessa Stalling’s often satisfying staging for TimeLine Theatre doesn’t square this circle—and probably can’t.
How do we love people through their trauma? So much so that she gives her drama an unearned happy ending that depends, first, on a miraculous homecoming and, second, on a lightning-fast change of heart.
It was an experience not to be forgotten.
Audience Reactions This was an excellent play, and I laud TimeLine for selecting it as one of its shows. There are two kinds of Holocaust narrative, after all: Chicago Tribune – Highly Recommended. Although the Holocaust is ever-present… this play is about what happened to a pretty girl. Mordechai insists that she come to live with her sister, Rose.
