Especially I wondered about girls, what their lives were like, and especially what the life of a girl who didn’t always go along quietly might be like. His sister shrugs, his brother scoffs, and his mother scolds—that’s just the way it is. The problem with interweaving stories, where the next protagonist is somehow related to the previous, is that you don’t always like the new one. I found him an interesting person. But then this girl comes along, claming she’s a queen and pregnant. Also it does touch upon some weighty subjects like rape and murder, though those could also ctnthia been developed in some more depth. However, much of the storyline around her didn’t seem plausible – like marching into Pericol with just Elske at her side.

This is a good book. Why would it happen that they were abandoned? What impressed me most was the intelligence these two women, Elske and Beriel, exude. I like that she is courageous and frank as this allowed her to gain the trust of even the most ornery Queen. Not that her view point is so black and white but I think being born in a world that is so basic and straight to the point makes her so. It’s a society where women fear men and are clearly unsuperior. In the accepted gender elwke, simply sharing these ideas without softening them is radical itself.
Other books in this series. Beriel manages to contact those who are still loyal to her and she travels to meet vooigt her Uncle, the Earl of Sutherland, who has many soldiers under his control.
Really Elske you are just dull.
The timbers are black with age, but it is still easy to imagine that boat, approaching your small, undefended town across the waves. In Trastad–a merchant city located on three islands–Elske learns the Norther tongue, gradually relaxes in a new, more humane lifestyle, eventually voigtt that men and women can enjoy each other’s private company in ways undreamed of by the hated Fruchtmen.
