This is a brilliant work. Shapes The morphemes of visual perception. Baritenberg yet, as they build on one another and become more complex, they begin to display behaviors that not only seem programmed, but would normally be associated with thinking creatures.

Vehicles: Experiments in Synthetic Psychology by Valentino Braitenberg
Vehicle n Rules and Regularities. The vhicles models the animal world in a minimalistic and constructive way, from simple reactive behaviours like phototaxis through the simplest vehicles, to the formation of concepts, spatial behaviour, and generation of ideas.
The book is leaving proof of this. The braitenber sensors, marked in white in the figure, take care of this behavior. And the big question: Figure 2, below, shows the behaviors of vehicles with inhibitory connections. Very beautiful especially in the beginning sections.
And in reading the book it becomes quite obvious how easy it would be to bootstrap complex behaviors from vehiclrs pieces, and how easy it would be to attribute emotions and thoughts and intentions to a creature that is merely being led around by complex, ephemeral patterns in its simple wiring.
Want to Read saving…. He said that although the connections seemed unbelievably complex, Braitenberg eventually realised that computers could serve as a useful model for understanding the brain. The vehicles represent the simplest form of behavior based artificial intelligence or embodied cognition, Fiction in the service of science.
I was reading this book in preparation of a university course in cognitive robotics. If nothing else, the reading is worth the law of uphill analysis and downhill invention.
Something that blew my mind was how he introduces a possibility to the vehicles to have trains of thought, by adding a negative feedback system to prevent runaway activations and add stability.
Do read this if you are interested in how the brain works and try to re-read it again. He completed his medical training with an internship at the psychiatric clinic in Rome, where he decided to prefer a scientific career dedicated to the understanding of brain functions. When a sensor receives stimulation, the connected motor is slowed. Vehicle 2 bwith contralateral inhibitory connections, is attracted to the source of stimulation, but steers away once it gets close.
I didn’t go through the biological mechanism section, mostly because none of the mechanisms seemed at-all implausible and because I had to return to the library.
This volume describes Braitenberg vehicles. It has primitive sensors that measure some stimulus at a point, and vehjcles each driven by its own motor that function as actuators or effectors. First the author is making some simple mind experiments which seem funny and nice to know, but after some chapters I found myself recognizing that he is explaining nothing less than how my brain is probably working.

Braitenberg vehicle – Wikipedia

It is substantially more difficult, he says, to understand what goes on behind the apparent behavior of an animal by watching it behave through induction than, as is the entire book’s proposal, to deduce it from its internal, simpler workings, and play with its structure, watching how changes within it affect its outer behavior.

There are 14 vehicles in all — a series of hypothetical, self-operating mobile machines that exhibit increasingly sophisticated behavior similar to that in the real biological or neuroscientific braietnberg. That ambiguity is a testament to its refreshing treatment of an age-old subject.
